Mixed Blessing

Governor Kaine has one of the highest approval ratings in the nation (67%). I really, really wish this wasn't a result of his reaction to the Virginia Tech massacre, but in part it is. I told voters in 2005 that Kaine was the kind of public servant that was an agent of change. That he brought people together to solve problems. And he has been a leader, taking unpopular positions to solve our most pressing problems. Now, when a single crazed gunman makes us re-evaluate positions we hadn't thought about in a long time, Governor Kaine takes action, and in a single fell swoop makes our Commonwealth much safer.

Much has been made of Mayor Giuliani commenting that he thanked God on 9/11 that George Bush was our President. Well, let me say that in a time when we need sensible and proactive leadership, thank God Tim Kaine is our Governor.

Governor Kaine has made us less safe
by giving people the illusion of safety. Virginia was already reporting more names to the federal database than any other state, clearly adding more is not the answer. Governor Kaine has also endangered the lives and well being of all citizens of Virginia living with a psychiatric label by quickly targeting mental illness as the problem that needs solving rather than automatic weapons or police response or availability of services in the first place. He tells everyone else that they should not exploit this tragedy for political purposes while he exploits the reputation of people struggling with psychiatric illness to make himself look good. This from a Governor who was elected as pro-disability rights. Apparently he meant every other disability except psychiatric. We are going to spend millions on worthless and ineffective forced treatment of people who are no danger to anyone while people who want services will continue to wait and wait even longer for basic adequate mental health services in the community. More people will kill themselves while waiting for services, more people will die from the effects of forced and unmonitored psychotropic drugs. Oh yeah, I feel a lot safer.

I want my vote back.
